AI Age Prediction is Coming to YouTube!
YouTube is preparing to analyze users regardless of their declared date of birth with its new machine learning-based age prediction system, which will launch on August 13, 2025, for a limited group of users in the US.
How Does the System Work?
- Artificial intelligence evaluates signals such as search history, the types of videos you watch, video categories, and the account creation date to determine whether users are under 18.
- This system operates independently of the age information stated on the user's profile; this means that age statements that do not match the actual age information can be revised by this AI system.
Security and Protection Measures
If the system classifies a user as under 18, the following measures are automatically implemented:
- Personalized ads are disabled.
- Digital wellness tools such as time limits and screen time reminders are activated.
- Repetitive video recommendations on sensitive topics such as body image or social content are limited.
- Privacy warnings are displayed when commenting or uploading videos.
What Happens in Case of Error?
If the system makes an incorrect classification, such as incorrectly labeling an adult as a teenager, the user can provide proof of age, such as a government-approved ID, a selfie, or a credit card. After this verification, access restrictions are lifted, allowing the user to access age-restricted content.
Launch, Testing, and Expected Impacts
- The system will initially enter a testing phase with a small group of users in the US.
- If results are positive, the system will gradually expand to other markets.
- For content creators, this could mean that younger users will not be included in the targeted advertising crisis, potentially posing a risk of lost ad revenue.
