Instagram Ads are Getting an Extra Tax!
We're not surprised, are you?
Unfortunately, advertising costs are rising, and things are getting even more difficult in the digital world.
Another significant development has occurred that will directly impact costs in the digital advertising world. Meta has announced a new fee model for Instagram and Facebook ads. This application, called "Local Fee," will add a 5% tax to advertisers' budgets.
While rising advertising costs, competition, and changes in platform algorithms have already begun to put pressure on brands in recent years, this new regulation will directly affect advertisers, especially in Turkey.
What is Meta's "Local Fee" Tax?
The Local Fee announced by Meta is not actually a tax imposed by the platform itself. According to Meta's explanation, many countries levy digital service taxes or similar taxes on digital platforms.
Meta has now decided to pass this cost on to advertisers.
In short:
- The government → collects digital advertising tax from Meta
- Meta → passes this cost on to advertisers
Therefore, an additional fee will be added to your advertising spending.
How Much Will Advertising Costs Increase?
The new system will add a 5% surcharge to advertisers' budgets.
Example calculation:
- Advertising budget: 1,000 TL
- Local Fee (5%): 50 TL
- Total payment: 1,050 TL
In addition, the 20% VAT already applied in Turkey will continue.
So the total cost is:
Advertising budget + 5% Local Fee + 20% VAT
This means a significant increase in costs, especially for high-budget campaigns.
Why Does Turkey Pay the Highest Advertising Rate?
According to Meta, Local Fee rates vary by country.
The rates in some countries are as follows:
- France → 2% – 3%
- Italy → 2% – 3%
- Spain → 2% – 3%
- United Kingdom → 2% – 3%
- Turkey → 5%
- Austria → 5%
Meta explained that these rates are determined according to the taxes applied by each country to digital platforms.
Therefore, one of the highest rates will be applied to Instagram and Facebook ads shown in Turkey.
When Will the New Tax Start?
According to Meta's announcement, the Local Fee will come into effect on July 1, 2026. The system will automatically add this fee to advertising campaigns launched or ongoing after this date.
What Does This Mean for Advertisers?
This change will particularly affect the following areas:
- Digital marketing budgets
- E-commerce advertising expenditures
- Agency-managed campaigns
- Instagram and Facebook advertising strategies
Planning and optimization will become even more critical, especially for brands with high advertising budgets.
Therefore, brands will need to:
- Replan their advertising budgets
- Make their campaign targeting more accurate
- Increase their ROI (return on investment) analysis
In short, Meta's 5% Local Fee application is starting a new era that will increase Instagram and Facebook advertising costs in Turkey.
In the already highly competitive and costly digital advertising world, this development necessitates that brands plan their advertising strategies more intelligently and based on data.
From July 1st, Instagram ads will likely have to contend not only with algorithms but also with tax burdens.
